What Makes Modern Music Different From Classical Music?

There are many different genres of music. Every genre has a style that makes it different from the other genres. But one particular difference that may be felt by everybody the most is the difference between the modern music and the classical music. The two types of music are very different from each other. We all feel the difference yet it is difficult for us to put our finger on it. What is exactly that element which makes modern music different from classical music? In this blog we attempt to understand this difference and then clearly define them. Read on to know more.

1. Time

While modern music and classical music are very different, their time periods are the most obvious. Classical music is usually considered music that was created before the 19th Century, while modern music is music that was created after the 19th Century. They are also immensely different in many other aspects, such as instruments used, form, style, purpose and so on. Let’s discuss them in detail.

2. Instruments Used

Classical music generally employs a group of acoustic instruments. These instruments include violins, cellos, cellos, flutes, trumpets, trombones, clarinets, and trombones. Modern music, on the other hand, employs instruments like keyboard, electric bass, and guitar and drums.

3. Form & Style

General forms of classical music include rondo, mass, oratorio and sonata. These forms can last from minutes to hours. And emphasis is placed on the vocals and expressing emotions. While modern music generally consists of a series of verses and choruses in different orders and usually lasts a few minutes. Modern songs focus more on the music and the feel of the song as a whole.

4. Purpose Of The Song

Classical music’s purpose is generally to celebrate an event or entertain a sitting audience while stimulating the listeners mentally and emotionally. While most modern songs are created simply for dancing or just for the pleasure of listening.

These are the four main differences between modern songs and classical songs. However here they are discussed in very plain language. A learned music artist can point out these differences with a lot of nuances that somebody lacking a deep understanding of music may not understand. For common people, we can say that these are the four main elements that account for so much change in the way these two music sounds.
